Assessment and Reports

Daily Observations are recorded in a special Observation Book by the teaching practitioner.

Assessments may be conducted twice per annum. Practitioners can refer to their most recent daily observations to get the current information about a child’s development and record it on the Assessment Sheet. If the observation note does not suffice or is out of date, then do an assessment. The trick is to keep assessments informal as very young children won’t be able to cope with formal testing.

Reports are extremely important documents and the words written in a child’s report may follow them around for many years. Remember to be impeccable with your word, don’t make assumptions, and avoid making diagnoses (unless you are a licensed therapist!). If something negative needs to be said, do it tactfully!

Planning and Preparation

Without a daily routine, registers, class planning, and daily lesson planning pandemonium will reign!

Class Registers are taken every morning. Amongst other things they:

Daily Lesson Plans ensure that every day is productive, and the practitioners will be well prepared. Completed lesson plans are brought to the weekly Class Preparation Meeting where ideas can be swopped and the principal checks that all the ELDAs have been met that week.

Themes

This section has great planning tools with heaps of information to make your themes meaningful and current.

The themes are very useful. They make planning different activities easier and are used as ‘hooks to hang’ the developmental areas on. For example, If the theme is Pond Life, then the gross motor activity could be froggie jumps which are then measured and mathematics will also have been covered.

Registers

Registers are used in many areas of your ECD practice, and that includes curriculum. In the classroom the Attendance Register will be used every morning and the Aftercare Register will be used several times during the course of the afternoon. Remember to use a register to ensure that the toys in the classroom are kept clean and in good condition.

Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Maths (“STEAM”)

STEAM learning starts at the very beginning of a child’s life. It is the hands-on things that children do every day in every way. It is not about showing very young children flashcards or teaching geometry! 

STEAM topics encompass a large group of skills that represent multiple developmental domains. Children are born primed to explore STEAM content while they play and explore, and make sense of their world.

STEAM learning includes examining shapes, playing with blocks, box construction, imaginative play, pouring liquids and other (child-safe) liquids, filling and emptying containers of different sizes, mixing paints to create new colors, and a myriad of other everyday activities.
